Treatment Options For Herniated Disc

improve postureA herniated disc is a common spinal injury. Also called a slipped disc, it may lead to pain and a loss of sensation throughout the body. But, many treatment options are available at Florida Wellness Medical Group to help you recover from a herniated disc.

What Is A Herniated Disc?

Discs are found in between each vertebra in the spine. These discs work to absorb shock and cushion the bones in the spine. The middle of each disc is soft, while the outside has a rubber-like texture. If the outside of the disc (called the annulus) tears and some of its center (the nucleus) protrudes from the tear, a herniated disc occurs.

Herniated discs can lead to irritation in the nerves near the spine. This can lead to arm or leg pain, weakness, and/or numbness. But, many patients don’t experience any symptoms.

The main cause of a herniated disc is disc degeneration. With the aging process, the spinal discs lose flexibility and may more easily tear with movement. But, herniated discs may also be caused by a traumatic injury, which makes it a common injury among auto accident victims.

Herniated Discs in Auto Accidents

The impact of a car accident can subject your spine to a significant amount of force. This force can affect your spinal discs and potentially force a disc’s nucleus out of the annulus, causing a herniated disc. People with pre-existing spinal degeneration are at a higher risk for a herniated disc in a car accident. Florida Wellness Medical offers specialized motor vehicle injury care, including treatment for herniated discs.

Treatment For Herniated Discs

While some rare, severe cases of a herniated disc may require surgical treatment, non-surgical treatment is usually successful for herniated discs. These treatment options may include physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and hot and cold therapy, among other methods. Chiropractic care can also be beneficial in herniated disc treatment.

Herniated Disc Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care can help address pain throughout the spine after a herniated disc. A spine injury can impact your entire body, and your chiropractor can help with the full extent of your symptoms. Your chiropractor will check your nerves, reflexes, and muscle strength to determine the best course of treatment. This may include spinal manipulation, manual therapy, and various exercises for regaining strength and motion in the spine. Chiropractic care can relieve pressure on the spinal nerves to reduce symptoms from a herniated disc.
