Migraine affects millions of Americans and billions of people around the world. It’s a condition that can be debilitating and disruptive to day-to-day life. Migraine treatment can also be tricky, given that not all patients experience relief from traditional treatment methods. Chiropractic care, however, is gaining recognition as a potential route to recovery for people suffering from migraines. At Florida Wellness Medical Group, we offer care from a team of skilled chiropractors and can develop a treatment plan to help you experience migraine relief.
What Is Migraine?
Before delving into the benefits of chiropractic care for migraine, let’s cover what migraine entails. Migraine is a neurological condition that’s most commonly associated with severe headaches. A history of migraines in the family makes you more likely to develop the condition, either in childhood or early adulthood.
Migraine Symptoms
There are four main stages of a migraine: prodrome, aura, attack, and postdrome. The prodrome stage usually occurs a day or two before the full migraine sets in. During this stage, many people experience depression, fatigue, yawning, irritability, hyperactivity, cravings for specific foods, and/or stiffness in the neck.
Not all migraines have auras. But, in those that do, the aura sets in after the prodrome phase. The aura may include difficulty speaking, tingling in the face, arms, or legs, seeing flashes of light or shapes, or temporary vision loss.
The next phase is the attack phase. This can be considered the migraine itself. Symptoms in this phase may include an intense headache, increased light and sound sensitivity, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. During a migraine, you may feel throbbing or pounding pain in the head, pain on one side of the head, or pain in the temples.
Migraines can be crippling. But, ongoing chiropractic care from Florida Wellness Medical Group can help. Chiropractic care focuses on the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system. Migraines mainly relate to the nervous system, as nerves can release substances that can trigger inflammation in the brain’s blood vessels, potentially causing a migraine. Muscle tension and joint pain can also contribute to or result from migraines. Chiropractic care can help release pressure on the nerves, joints, and muscles to reduce migraine-causing inflammation.
Our team of chiropractors also has nutrition and lifestyle expertise and can provide recommendations to lower your risk for migraines. We can also offer exercises to help you fend off the tightness and inflammation that can lead to migraines.
