Diagnostic X-Ray Imaging

X-rays use electromagnetic energy to create images of tissues, bones, and organs inside your body. This form of imaging is primarily used to diagnose bone and joint injuries, though it may be implemented for certain soft tissue conditions.

X-rays involve the following steps:

  • You’ll need to remove any jewelry or clothing that could interfere with the imaging. Depending on the area to be examined, you may need to wear a gown.
  • Your physician will position the area of the body between an image plate and the X-ray machine. You may be standing up or sitting on an X-ray table while the image is taken.
  • Any areas of the body that aren’t being imaged may need to be protected with a lead apron. This blocks unnecessary exposure to the X-rays.
  • Your physician will advise you to remain very still while the image is taken.
  • Multiple X-ray images at different angles may need to be taken to thoroughly examine the injury.
